School Wellness Policies

. Posted in Health and Wellness

The 2004 Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act mandated that all local school districts develop wellness policies to be implemented by the start of the 2006-2007 school year. The National Council for Nutrition and Activity Coalition (NANA) developed a model wellness policy for schools. National PTA's participation in this coalition emphasizes a strongly held belief that parents are the best teachers for their children and lessons on nutrition and healthy living are some of the best examples of this idea. National PTA works to strengthen the voice of all parents in deciding the policies local school districts will adopt to meet the nutritional, physical, and developmental needs of their children.

The US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service website shares the local wellness policy requirements, how to create, implement, and evaluate a wellness policy, examples, and implementation tools and resources. This is a great resource for local schools who are in the process of revising and evaluating their own wellness policy.
